As a young boy, John Kennedy attended an elite private school in Boston, where uniforms were required. These uniforms were very important to children and they would be in trouble if something happened to their uniforms, especially their hats.
The children walked home from school together, and on their way was a wall that was nearly impossible to climb. As the kids try to jump over the wall, “I’m sure you can’t climb. I’m sure you can’t!” they would provoke each other. One day, John Kennedy grabbed his hat and threw it over the wall! He knew he couldn’t go home without that hat; I mean, he knew that once he threw the hat over the wall, he would have to climb that wall.
Well, do you understand what he’s trying to do? John Kennedy had put this on his head when he was throwing his hat (he had to get his hat before he went home to avoid getting into trouble), so he was determined and made up his mind to get over the wall with this determination. He knew that if he threw his hat off the wall, he would climb that wall.
This is a good example of how instinctive children can be in reaching higher levels of mental power. Of course he wasn’t thinking that deeply at that age, John.
Still, he threw that hat over the wall.
